Final Draft

This is my final draft. After researching and developing my ideas I have designed this draft, as this is what I want my final book cover piece to look like.

Case Study

Development/Experimentation

For my development and experimentation I decided to use one of my further drafts and add more detailed and design it further. To do this I re-drew my draft and I added more detail to the draft, then I decided to experiment and use watercolour on the while design of my book cover. I used a analogous colour scheme and I used different values and saturation of the colours blue, green and a greeny blue colour. I used this colour scheme on my re-designed draft because I thought that it would fit to the teem and story of The Fault In Our Stars and it the colours work well on my developed draft.

Colour Schemes

used one of my book cover drafts that I created and I coloured it using different colour schemes. I did four different colour schemes, that were monochromatic, triadic, analogous and complementary.

Monochromatic

For my monochromatic colour scheme, I used a pink colour palette. I used various values if the colour; dark, medium and pale. This colour palette has connotations of love and relationships, this links with the theme of the whole unit which is relationships. It also links to the story that I chose to do, the fault in our stars, as this is about love and relationships. This colour palette has used just one hue, meaning that this palette is unified.

Triadic

For the Triadic colour scheme, I used a colour palette of green, blue and orange. These colours a like a triangle on the colour wheel. The use of green, connotates strong emotion, which is in correspondence with being safe, which links to the theme and story as, they feel safe together. The colour blue, represents peace, which links to the story and theme. Orange suggests joy and happiness, which links to the feeling of being in a relationship and represents the happiness that they have within the story.

Analogous

For the analogous I used a colour palette of yellow and orange, as the are next to each other on the colour wheel and I mixed the two colours together and created a yellows/orange colour. I used these colours as they represent joy and happiness, which links to the theme of relationships and the story which I am basing my book cover around, which connotates the happiness and enjoyment within the sorry.

Complementary

For the complementary colour scheme, I used a colour palette of green and pink, in which I used various values of the colours. These colours compliment each other as they are opposite each other on the colour wheel. These colours help to represent the theme of relationships, because of the connotations that they have, green has connotations of safe and emotion and pink has connotations of love. This links in well with the theme of relationships and the story, The Fault In Our Stars.

This is a colour scheme that I did, with a draft that I made. I decided to do a black and blue/green colour scheme because I thought that it would fit in with the theme of my book cover which is The Fault In Our Stars and I felt the colours were relevant. I follows a monochromatic cour scheme because it goes from the black of the colour to the actual blue colour, which shows the gradient of the colour as well.

Further Drafting

To help me to develop my ideas for my final piece, I did some further drafting. I have encorporated drawings from my subject matter and developed them to create my further drafting, to influence my ideas and to develop my final piece.

Digital Type Choices

These are different typefaces that I found, when looking through Dafont. These typefaces that I have chosen, are the typefaces that I thought were appropriate for the theme of my book and would suit my designs and drafts of my book and would help to influence and develop my ideas for my final piece. I have annotated the digital type and I have circled the typefaces that I liked the most and thought would contrast and suit my theme well.

Typography Choices - Own Character Set

To make my own character set of type, I decided to take photos of the alphabet letters, which I created from using cigarettes. This would link to my theme and what my book cover is based on, 'The Fault In Our Stars'.

I designed my own character set typeface. Firstly I drew out the alphabet in pen.

Then I chose the colour blue and coloured in the letters using a watercolour blue.

Typeface Moodboard

This is a moodboard that I created, which would help me to develop and influence my own typeface/character set. I researched the theme of my book and researched it and made this mood board, from the images that have influenced me and helped me to develop my ideas to create my own character set.

Emulation

After creating my copy on Illustrator, i created a emulation using the same technique and i used the elements that are to do with my subject matter, The Fault In Our Stars.

I placed my drawing of my subject matter, into a new document in Illustrator and i used the pen tool to create the elements of my subject matter. Before i filled them in, i just had a outline, so i could see what shape i was making and if i was using the pen tool correctly, to create the shape. After, i did that i filled the drawing with colour.

Next, i changed the background colour, so that i could make the emulation more to do with my subject matter of The FaultIn Our Stars. I went over some more of the elements with the pen tool and i filled some of them with relevant colours.

Next, i placed in some more of my different drawings of my subject matter. I chose some of the elements that i had drawn and i used the pen tool to create the element on illustrator.

Next, i decided to order the elements that i had created on illustrator using the pen tool. I moved the elements around and ordered them so that they look similar to the copy that i created using the same technique on Illustrator.

Then, to make my emulation look more like my copy, i put some text on the emulation. The text that i put on my emulation are quotes that are relevant to the different elements from the story and parts of the story which are key to the of, The Fault In Our Stars.

I made the document bigger, so that i could created the whole of the book cover. I decided the just use one colour and have the different elements different tones of the colour, grey. I decided to just use the one colour with different tones of it because i thought that the colour grey would fit more to my theme of my book cover and is more relevant to the fault in our stars.

After, I decided to just use one colour, grey. I coloured the elements on my emulation and I used the same colour but just with different saturations. For the spine Iade it into a tube, to fit in with the story of the fault in our stars.

For the back of my book cover, I decided to have a prescription paper on the back, as this would fit into the whole story and theme of my book cover, which is the adult in our stars and I thought that a prescription paper would be relevant.

I altered the back of my book cover, so that the prescription paper, looked more realistic, I changed the edges of it to make it look more like paper. Then I fill the back of the book cover with Loren Epsom, to make it look like the blurb of the story. I changed the typeface of the title, 'The Fault In Our Stars' and the name on the prescription piece of paper, 'Queen's Hospital Prescription' to a different typeface. I chose the 'Peach Milk' typeface as i thought that it linked well with the overall look of my emulation. To make the rest of the type contrast with the 'Peach Milk' typeface I chose a serif typeface for my other text, which I chose 'Always In My Heart'. I chose that typeface so that it contrasted with my other type on my emulation and was relevant as well.
I decided also, to add one element of colour to my emulation to make it protrude, so I changed the colour of the cigarette packet to red.

This is my final emulation piece that I created following the same style as my copy and using Illustrator. Finally, to finish my emulation, I added the name of the story, 'The Fault In Our Stars' onto the spine, I the typeface of 'Peach Milk', to write the name onto the spine.

Drafting Ideas

These are different drafting ideas that i created, to help to influence and develop my ideas for my final piece. I have created different designs using various techniques such as pencil drawing and photoshop.

Using a Found Photo
This is a draft that i created using a found photo and i created it on Photoshop.

Black and White and One other Colour
I created another draft of a front cover, on photoshop and this time i made it so that it was black and white and i included one other colour which in this case is red.

Just Text
I designed other draft, to help to influence my ideas for my final piece and this time i just used typography on my front cover, i designed this by drawing out the text.

Use a Checkerboard Grid
Another drafting idea, that i designed was using a checkerboard grid, which would included different elements from the story, The Fault In Our Stars.

Repeat an Element
This is another drafting idea that i created, i did this by doing a pencil drafting. I decided to repeat an element from the story, which is quite significant to the story, which in this case i chose to repeat the element of a cigarette.

Pattern From Context
For another of my drafting ideas, i chose to create a pattern from the context of the story, The Fault In Our Stars. I used the elements of clouds and cigarettes to create the pattern from context.

Using Selected Elements From The Story
I chose some elements from the story and i created a draft of my front cover and tried to think more poetically, with having trees because they provide oxygen.

Think Poetically
I then decided to create a pencil drawn draft for my front cover, so i thought more poetically, using trees because they provide oxygen and the character in the story, needs oxygen.

Group Various Aspects
I created another drafting idea and i grouped various aspects from the story, to create my draft.

Extreme Close-up
ANoter drafting idea, was to do a extreme close-up of a elements from the story. I decided to do a pencil drawn extreme close-up of a cigarette packet and i incorporated the name of the story on to the cigarette packet.

Change Your Viewpoint
Another drafting idea, i used to design a draft for my front cover, was to change my viewpoint. So, i took a more literate viewpoint of the story and decided to draw out stars but in using the triangles to show how the link up and stick together.

Use Black and White
For another one of my drafting ideas, i did a pencil drawing and just used the colours of black and white.

Copy

After researching through Pinterest, I found and decided to do this for my copy. I decided that I would do my copy on Illustrator.

I drew out the different elements of the copy and then I took it into Illustrator. Using Illustrator, I went over the images that I had drawn out from the copy, using the pen tool. After I had drawn out the elements using the pen tool, I filled them in with the relevant colours, so that it would look like the image that I am copying.

I went over more of the elements that I had drawn out from the copy with the pen tool and I filled them in with the relevant colours, just like the image that I am copying.

I started to order some of the elements that I had done with the pen tool on Illustrator, just like how they were ordered on the image that I am copying.

I started to go over some more of the elements with the pen tool. To make sure that I was making the element right just like the copy, I went over them with the pen tool, with just having a thick outline, so that I could see if I needed to change it. Then after I had completed the image using the pen tool, I filled it with the relevant colour.

After, I had finally gone over all the elements with the pen tool I started to resize them, move them around and order them to look like the image that I was copying.

When I had finished ordering the elements on Illustrator for my copy, I drew out the type off the image that I was copying and took the drawn out type into Photoshop, where I coloured them in with the relevant colours, just like the copy. Once I did that I took the type into my Illustrator document and put them in the relevant places and made sure that it looked like the image that I was copying.

This is my final copy piece that I had created, using Illustrator and copying the image that I had found from researching and I decided to copy.
